If little by little you stop loving me I shall stop loving you. Little by little If suddenly you forget me, Do not look for me For I shall already have forgotten you.
These are lines from Pablo Neruda’s famous poem “If You Forget Me”. 𝐈𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗱, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲. 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹, 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
I carry your heart with me(I carry it in my heart)I am never without it(anywhere I go you go, my dear; and whatever is done by only me is your doing, my darling)
E. E. Cummings in his poem “I carry your heart with me(I carry it in” expresses an 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐧 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫, 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐞𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞.
Humans, aren’t they complicated? But what makes them complicated? Hmm……… Feelings
Feelings are the most humanly things, mysterious yet universal. In depth of it there is something that is unexpected. Something that requires validation but at the same time is complete on its own.
Humans, being social animals, thrive for love in the midst of their live’s monotony and emptiness. They break down their inner walls and become close, but their opposing personalities and emotions drive them apart.
A state where we want to come close to each others but don’t want to hurt them or get hurt by them.
During winter many animals hurdles for warmth but in case of porcupines, as they came close to each other they start hurting each other with their spikes so they need to keep some distance but as they go away cold hunts them.
The cold does not let them go far, the quills don’t allow them to come close to each other. So what can a poor porcupine do ? It appears to be a never-ending loop.
This is where we notice the importance of boundaries. We need to find a safe distance, as the hedgehogs does. Schopenhauer explains that this safe distance lies in “politeness” and “good manners” — a capacity to recognise each other’s boundaries and respect them.
As William Shakespeare says — Mine honour is my life; both grow in one; Take honour from me, and my life is done.
